Mimosa Sun Printed QuiltCreated Summer 2007 This is a quilt created to show off my hand painted fabrics. I sun printed mimosa leaves on white muslin using Setacolor irridescent paints. I love these paints because they allow you to paint wet or dry, they blend beautifully, can be sunprinted, resisted, and do great salt effects. Mimosa was the first quilt that I used painted fabric in. I guess I was a little worried about quilting over the sun printed leaves, so I left most of the quilt open and bordered everything with simple black fabric. Sun printing is actually very easy. The paints do all the work! All I did was painted a layer of blue paint over the fabric using a foam board to secure the fabric. I then took the whole thing outside and set it in the sun with freshly cut mimosa leaves draped over the top. As the fabric dries in the sun, the places where the leaves are shadowing get bleached out. The effect is really beautiful fabric with white imprints left where the leaves once were. Eventually I will come back to this quilt and at more to it. I would definitely call this a work in progress!
