Moon Landing
Created August 2011

I designed this quilt for my son James when he was 4 1/2 years old and his favorite thing in the whole world was space, rocket ships, astronauts, aliens, and robots. When I designed the quilt, every few minutes he would come inside the studio and point at the big blue planet and say "That's where I'm from! That's my blue planet."
This quilt was created by fusing multiple layers of fabric together using Wonder Under Fusible Web. With this piece, mostly I was experimenting with using both trapunto and fusible web in the same project. It didn't work great, mostly because I didn't satin stitch or finish the edges of my appliques in any way. Next time I'll either satin stitch the edges, or stitch over the surface with free motion embroidery before adding trapunto. Live and learn!
Many free motion quilting designs were used to complete the surface of the quilt including: Desert Sand, Universe Spiral, Stippling, and Basic Spiral.
I do have plans to turn this little wallhanging into a pattern or a video tutorial in 2012.
