Sunrise of a New DayCompleted July 6th, 2008 Sunrises are the most beautiful time of day. The sun welcomes the start of a new morning by painting the sky with the most beautiful colors imaginable. My mother has always loved sunrises. I can remember watching her search for a good sunrise poster to wake up to in the morning. There is something peaceful and calming in a a sunrise landscape, and no matter how long you look, your eyes will not get tired of seeing it again and again. My mom is turning 50 this year and to mark the occasion I decided to make her this quilt. This landscape was designed all in one piece using large sheets of 1" graph paper. Had I created the quilt to the original paper design, I would probably still be working on it today! When quilts get too large, especially art quilts, they're difficult to work on under a standard sewing machine arm. For this quilt I split the design into 3 equal pieces that I appliqued using the No Sewing Until You Quilt It method of french fusible applique. Believe it or not, the each section was completely put together and basted before I took 1 stitch! The result is a stunning art quilt that was very easy to make, but when hung together about 4" apart, still has the same effect as if it was completed in one piece. The background of this quilt was painted onto cheap white muslin using Setacolor Translucent paints. The ripples on the sides were created by allowing the fabric to dry with slight folds in it.
