The Scarlet LetterCreated September 2009
This is a wholecloth quilt created with Crepe Back Satin, a form of satin that does not stretch (much), is machine washable, and is fairly color fast. This quilt was inspired by a Diane Gaudynsky quilt that had trapunto squares around motifs. I really liked the look of the squares, but couldn't decide what to pair them with until I thought of The Scarlet Letter. The central "A"
was inspired by the cover of a copy of the Scarlet Letter the book,
hand drawn onto graph paper, then transfered to the quilt top using
a lightbox. Crepe back satin was interesting to work with and defintely produces wholecloth quilts you can really see in photos, unlike white cotton wholecloths that look like bedsheets when you photograph them! I probably won't work with this material again because it really wasn't easy to quilt with. It doesn't stretch as much as you might think, but still enough that it can wreck havoc with a quilting design, particularly the squares. There were 6 free motion filler designs used as background fillers for this piece:
I learned a lot about using particular filler designs in tight areas with this piece. Matrix, though beautiful, is not a filler I will ever use in tight places ever again because it's so difficult to keep the lines continuously flowing across the quilting motifs. Stacking fillers like Pebbling and Swirling Bananas worked really well in these areas as well as the independent filler Tree Roots and the echo filler Brain Coral. How the filler design is shaped really determines whether it will work in a particular area or not. Click Here to read more about Leah's Filler Design Theory with this article.
