Silver
Tree Quilt
Created Spring 2007

This
quilt represents a lot of firsts for
me. It was the first quilt I created
after my son, James, was born in February
2007. It was also the first quilt I
created with more than 3 layers.
We
often define quilts by just three layers:
fabric, batting, and back fabric to
make a quilt sandwich. By who ever said
we have to be limited to just
three layers? Inspired by a quilting
workshop with Dottie Moore, I created
the central tree using metallic silver
thread and satin stitched it down to
another quilt sandwich.
For
me, this quilt represents the newness
of life, even while surrounded by the
blackness of death. The meandering stitch
surrounding the central tree is indicative
of the twisting path of our lives. Through
all the twists and turns, eventually
we come around right.
