What in the world is "water soluble thread?"

Water soluble thread is thread that dissolves in water.

Why would we want thread to dissolve?

Water soluble thread is used in advanced quilting techniques, like trapunto, to hold fabrics or batting together.

You would use this thread in the creation process of a quilt where you need the fabrics to be held together, but you don't necessarily want the thread to show up in the finished quilt.

For example, you can use water soluble thread to anchor an applique to your quilt top. The thread will hold the fabric in place securely, just like regular thread.

After the quilting process is completely finished and your applique is firmly secure with many quilting stitches, you can emerse your whole quilt in water to dissolve the threads that originally held your applique in place.

Tips for using Water Soluble Thread:

  • Water soluble thread can be used as a top thread and a bobbin thread, but you will probably only want to use it in one place while working on a project. Most quilters use it as a top thread.

  • When using as a top thread, release all of your tension off the top, and try many different needles until you find one that works well with the thread.

  • Make sure to match your bobbin thread to your fabric colors as it can sometimes pull up to the top and when the water soluble thread is dissolved, appear as small loops in your quilt.

  • After using Water Soluble Thread, return it to it's packaging as it can weaken from moisture in the air.
